Food Photography More Than Just Pretty Plates

At 528 Creative, food photography has become one of the most exciting and rewarding parts of what we do. From Michelin-level kitchens like Lignum Restaurant in Galway, to hospitality clients like Ballymaloe House Hotel in Cork, to studio shoots for brands like Jameson Cold Brew, All Real Nutrition, and Altar Nutrition, we’ve built up years of experience creating professional food photography in Ireland that stands out online, in print, and on social. We’ve shot food for over 40+ restaurants, cafes, hotels and it's one of our favourite types of content to shoot, partly because sometimes we get to try the food as we shoot.

Shooting Food in a Live Environment

One of the biggest challenges in restaurant photography and hospitality food photography is that it often happens in live, working environments. We’ve shot in busy hotel kitchens, fine dining restaurants, and outdoor dining spaces across Cork, Dublin, Kerry, and Munster.

That means two things matter above all:

  • Timing – food doesn’t wait. Ice cream melts, steam disappears, garnish wilts. We work closely with chefs to understand each dish so we know exactly when it needs to hit the table for its close-up.
  • Minimal disruption – hotels and restaurants can’t stop service for a shoot. We pride ourselves on being fast, efficient, and respectful of staff and guests. Many times, people hardly notice we’re there.

From hotel dining rooms in Cork and Kerry, to restaurant photography in Dublin, we’ve learned how to blend into the background while still capturing dishes that show food at its very best.

Studio Food Photography

Some projects are better suited to a controlled environment. Our studio in Cork is where we can take the time to get everything perfect, lighting, composition, styling. This is especially important for product photography for food brands like Freezi Licks and food videography like our project with Market Street Deli.

When we shot the Jameson Cold Brew campaign, for example, we blacked out the studio to eliminate reflections on the black bottle and created a moody, cinematic look. With All Real Nutrition and Altar Nutrition, we focused on clean, ingredient-led photography and stop-motion content that worked beautifully across e-commerce, social media, and print.

Studio shoots allow for a lot of creativity too, whether it’s pouring shots, slow-motion captures, or ASMR-inspired visuals like we created for Urban Sips and Freezi Licks. For brands looking for food photography in Cork or Dublin, having a dedicated studio space makes a huge difference in terms of quality and control. In most cases though, the restaurant is ideal, as we can bring in elements of the restaurant, the kitchen into the imagery and that ties the imagery into the overall brand.

Storytelling Through Food

Great food photography and videography isn’t just about making dishes look delicious. It’s about telling the story behind the plate.

With Lignum, the focus wasn’t on the final dishes. We captured foraging wild garlic, preparing meat over open flames, and cooking over embers. The result was an evergreen video that reflected the restaurant’s soul without being tied to a seasonal menu.

For Ballymaloe House, food is part of the bigger story of heritage and hospitality. We combined shots of dishes with the dining spaces, gardens, and people to create a full picture of what it feels like to eat there.

For hotel wedding content, the food is part of the celebration: the champagne toast, the top table, the late-night snacks. Food becomes a character in the story of the day.

The Details That Matter

What separates a phone snap from professional food photography in Ireland is attention to detail.

We notice the small things: stray hairs, marks on a table, stains on a glass, a cigarette on the ground outside a restaurant exterior. All of these are distractions that we carefully remove in post-production, so the final images feel polished without losing authenticity.

Sometimes the easiest retouching is getting it right on the day, adjusting a plate, shifting a garnish, tweaking the lighting. But when that’s not possible, we’re confident in our ability to enhance images in editing so they truly stand out for restaurants, hotels, and food brands.

Food Photography That Works

At the end of the day, food photography in Cork, Dublin, Kerry, and across Munster is about creating content that works for our clients. That means versatile imagery that can live on your website, in social campaigns, on point-of-sale displays, or in print.

It also means photography that feels true to your brand. Sometimes that’s polished and cinematic, other times it’s natural and documentary-style. Either way, the goal is always the same: making people hungry, curious, and excited to experience it for themselves.
