CONTEXT

Over the last seven years at 528 Creative, we’ve filmed in more than 100 hotels across Ireland and another 100+ commercial premises, from SuperValu and Centra to Carry Out and Costcutter stores. One thing that never changes is the challenge (and the fun!) of shooting in a live environment where real customers and staff are going about their day.

We’ve built a reputation for making shoots smooth, respectful, and enjoyable for everyone involved, no matter the setting. Whether it’s a bustling hotel lobby, a busy supermarket, or a restaurant full of paying guests, our goal is simple: minimise disruption, maximise efficiency, and create brilliant content without getting in anyone’s way.

Respecting Staff and Customers

Shooting in a live commercial or hospitality environment requires more than good cameras and lights, it requires empathy, communication, and a bit of common sense.

  • Hotel shoots: If we’re filming a check-in scene at reception, we avoid busy times like early afternoon when guests are arriving or mornings during check-out. For dinner scenes, we’ll section off an area safely away from paying customers. Lighting is positioned to avoid hazards, and we work quickly so no one feels inconvenienced.
  • Retail shoots: In off-licences or supermarkets, timing is everything. Shooting first thing in the morning, early in the week, is far less disruptive than a Friday lunchtime when aisles are packed.
  • Food & drink content: Communication with chefs and waiting staff is key. We discuss each dish before it arrives, will it spoil quickly, change shape under the lights, or lose its texture? By understanding these details, we ensure the dish looks its best on camera while the kitchen runs smoothly in the background.

Communication is Everything

We pride ourselves on setting clear expectations before we ever hit record. On any given hotel shoot, we might interact with:

  • General managers
  • Chefs
  • Wait staff
  • Gym and spa staff
  • Cleaning teams
  • Marketing teams
  • And, of course, paying guests
  • Giving each of these groups time to voice their concerns (in advance and on the day) is vital. It helps avoid surprises, keeps things running smoothly, and shows respect for everyone involved.

Making Shoots Enjoyable

Here’s something simple but important: we make our shoots fun.

That means chatting with staff, treating everyone equally, and making sure the set never feels tense. Whether it’s the client looking over our shoulder to see the camera monitor or a 17-year-old college student stacking shelves part-time, everyone deserves respect and a bit of craic along the way.

We’ve found this approach creates a relaxed atmosphere that gets the best performances from cast, staff, and customers alike, and ultimately results in better content.

When the set is fun, it shows on camera. People who have never been filmed before can often feel nervous or stiff, but if the atmosphere is relaxed and light-hearted, that tension disappears. A bit of conversation, some laughs, and a comfortable environment go a long way. Suddenly, those who thought they’d be awkward in front of the lens look natural, confident, and genuinely happy. That authenticity makes the final content far more engaging.

Why it Matters

Filming in live hospitality and retail environments is delicate work. It’s about respecting the people who make those businesses tick, protecting the customer experience, and still capturing the cinematic, engaging content that makes brands shine.

At 528 Creative, those small details, from when we schedule a shoot to how we introduce ourselves to staff, are what set us apart. Because at the end of the day, a successful shoot isn’t just about what’s on camera. It’s about the experience everyone has along the way.
